Applying as a International Student

You will qualify as an international student if you hold a non-immigrant visa; or have applied for immigrant status but have not yet adjusted your status with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

  • Submit official transcript evaluations of secondary school scores, including mark sheets and date of graduation in their original language. A certified English translation of all transcripts must be included if the originals are not in English.

  • Submit Official SAT or ACT Scores or

  • Submit the Admissions Application Update Form to request Test Optional

  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended. If the original transcripts are not in English, a certified translation must accompany the original documents. If you attended a college or university outside the United States, your transcripts must be evaluated by a credential evaluation service recognized by UHD prior to applying for admission to the university.

  • If you are transferring from another college or university in the United States, you must submit a Foreign Advisor's Report & Transfer-In Form that has been completed and signed by the international student advisor at the previously attended institution. This form must be returned to the Office of International Admissions at UHD prior to enrollment.

  • Students who have attended UHD but were not enrolled at the institution for the last 3 long consecutive semesters may qualify for readmission.
  • Must have a UHD GPA prior to readmission.
  • Former student pursuing an undergraduate degree.
  • Former student seeking a second degree as a Post-Bac.

  • Current UHD degree-seeking students and alumni qualify for a graduate application fee waiver as long as an application fee has not already been submitted. Once an application fee has been submitted, it is non-refundable and good for one calendar year. Current UHD students and alumni can contact the Office of Graduate Admissions at gradadmissions@uhd.edu for more information prior to submitting their graduate application online.

  • Current UHD degree-seeking students and alumni may request their current and/or final official transcript through the Office of Graduate Admissions at gradadmissions@uhd.edu for purposes of completing their graduate application file for initial review, as well as to render admission decision through the program to which the student has applied.

  • Additional supporting documents are required for each specific program. Applicants should visit the program website for program requirements and other relevant information.

  • If you hold a non-immigrant visa, you are classified as an international student. If you have applied for immigrant status but have not adjusted your status with the Immigration and Naturalization Service, you must also apply for international admissions.

Affidavit of Support

Submit an Affidavit of Support indicating that a sponsor will be responsible for all of your educational and living expenses.

Permission Release Form

To protect your privacy rights, the Office of International Admissions requires that you give written permission specifying the person(s) who may access information concerning the status of your application and/or admission to the University of Houston-Downtown. If you wish to designate someone to have verbal and physical access to this information, please complete the Permission Release Form.

Bank Letter

You must provide a certified bank letter from your sponsor’s personal checking or savings account confirming their financial ability to support your education and living expenses. The letter should indicate the current account balance in either U.S. dollars or local currency and must reflect a minimum of $35,000. It must also have been issued within the past three months to be considered valid.

Language Proficiency

A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 550 for the paper version, 213 for the computer version, or  80 for the internet-based version (iBT), or an IELTS score of 6.5 is required for admission into UHD's academic programs.

Application processing time can vary depending on the time of year. Normal processing time is 4-5 business days once all required application materials are received. During peak periods (one month prior to the start of a semester), processing times can increase to 8-10 business days.
